Join the celebration of LGBT+ Parents/Carers Day
In the ever-evolving landscape of family, Proud 2 b Parents invites you to embrace diversity and join the celebration of LGBT+ Parents/Carers Day on 19 September. This date holds historical significance as it marks the first publication of the feminist magazine Spare Rib. Running from 1972 to 1993, Spare Rib played a crucial role in advancing discussions about women's rights, including the rights of lesbian parents. The magazine often featured articles that challenged societal norms and addressed issues of sexual orientation and family structures. The journey from that time to today reflects significant changes in societal attitudes towards LGBT+ families.
The mention of lesbian parents in Spare Rib (1976) triggered a need for objective research as courts often argued against lesbian parents or carers suitability in private law cases or child custody disputes in the UK and USA. Professor Susan Golombok, in her groundbreaking work, "Modern Families: Parents and Children in New Family Forms," traces this journey through four decades of empirical research. The book challenges stereotypes and showcases the resilience of non-traditional families.
In the 1970s, the 'nuclear' family was predominant, but societal shifts, including advancements in assisted reproductive technologies, rising numbers of single-parent families, and the emergence of LGBT+ families, have redefined our understanding of family. Today, 'non-traditional' families outnumber nuclear families, emphasising the richness of diverse family experiences.
Golombok's research consistently highlights a crucial truth – it's the quality of relationships that profoundly impacts family well-being. Whether same-sex parents, single mothers by choice, or families conceived through assisted reproductive technologies; it is the love, warmth, and commitment of parents that are the cornerstones of a thriving family.
Contrary to outdated notions, Golombok's findings reveal that children born through assisted reproduction are raised by highly committed parents, debunking stereotypes that questioned their parenting abilities. These children are deeply wanted, often born after overcoming significant hurdles, including societal disapproval.
The road to acceptance has been far from smooth. Same-sex parenting was once widely vilified as 'against nature,' and the struggles faced by lesbian mothers in custody battles reflected societal biases. However, societal attitudes have shifted over the years, leading to significant advancements. LGBT+ individuals can now marry, adopt jointly, and become joint legal parents through assisted reproductive technologies in many countries.
Yet, challenges persist. LGBT+ relationships remain criminalised in some parts of the world, forcing individuals to live in fear. Prejudice and discrimination is still all too common and the LGBT+ community have historically endured a larger amount of trauma than other communities, underscoring the ongoing importance of awareness and advocacy.
Proud 2 b Parents invites you to be part of a day that recognises progress, acknowledges challenges, and celebrates the diversity of all families. Be part of the campaign on 19 September! The chosen date symbolises a pivotal moment in history when the need for understanding and research was recognised.
