National Adoption Week: The English and Romanian Adoptees study (ERA)

The ERA study is the largest and longest investigation into the long-term outcomes of severe, early and prolonged institutional deprivation. Recent quantitative findings show elevated levels of neurodevelopmental problems, frequently persisting into adulthood and newly emerging mental health problems between adolescence and adulthood – despite spending many years in nurturing homes and elevated levels of service use.

In this webinar, findings from two recent qualitative papers will be discussed, highlighting the adoptee's point of view and that of their adoptive parents. In the first, we will characterise the challenges faced when engaging with service providers and offer insights into the group’s perceived service needs. In the second, we will relay participants’ experience of becoming a parent and the challenges they’ve faced in doing so. In the third, we will discuss experiences of social relationships, what the difficulties are, what the perceived impact is and what compensatory strategies the group has developed.

This talk will be delivered by Professor Edmund Sonuga-Barke, Dr Chris Edwards and Dr Mark Kennedy, from King’s College, London. 

PRESENTERS

Dr. Mark Kennedy

Dr Mark Kennedy is a lecturer and a researcher on the English and Romanian Adoptees study at King's College, London. His postdoctoral work has focused on the developmental outcomes of extreme early adversity, including ADHD/ neurodevelopmental disorders, attachment and mental health.
